How to choose a face wash based on your skin type

Beautiful skin is something that we all crave for, we spend a lot of money buying costly products like serums, moisturisers etc. to make our skin healthy and glowing but we forget about that basic product which is the base of every skin care routine i.e Face wash. We tend to choose any face wash without knowing our skin type and instead of solving our skin woes it aggravates them. A good facial cleanser can remove dirt, oil and other impurities from your skin but at the same time it contains ingredients which are good for a particular skin type and harmful for the other. But you need not worry about this, here is a complete guide to help you for choosing the best face wash based on your skin type:

1. For Dry Skin :

Face washes are designed to pull out dirt, grime and other impurities from your pores, and a harsh cleanser can further aggravate dry skin leaving it flaky, dull and full of fine lines. So it is very important to stay away from face washes which are harsh on your skin. If you have acne then harsh face washes can cause micro injuries to your skin which can cause bacteria to enter and make your acne worse. People with dry skin should use a non-foaming facewash and avoid ingredients like Salicylic acid or glycolic acid which can dry out your skin. Go for a cream or milk based cleanser with moisturising ingredients and fatty acids. Use unscented products as fragrance can spur irritation and cause redness and itching.Use ph balancing face wash and use a face wash with ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, niacinamide etc.  Hyaluronic acid is excellent for dry skin as it holds water in skin and protects it from getting dry. It also reduces fine lines.

2. For Oily Skin:

Our skin has sebaceous glands that produce oil to keep skin soft and moisturised. But when excess of sebum is produced it makes skin look greasy and oily and causes breakouts. Fluctuating hormones cause sebaceous glands to produce excess oil, this excess oil gets trapped in skin pores causing nighmares like those pesky zits, blackheads and whiteheads. Thats when cleansing becomes extremely important for oily skin but it doesn't mean that you keep on over cleansing, it will only worsen the situation as now oil glands will produce more oil to maintain the oil balance of your skin. What you need is a right face wash with right ingredients to keep your excess sebum in check. As acne are  very common for oily skin use a face wash with ingredients like Salicylic acid, glycolic acid or  benzoyl peroxide these ingredients are known to fight acne and excess sebum. Avoid skin cleansers that contain oil in the ingredients.

3. For Sensitive or Combination Skin:

It gets very tricky when it comes to treating a combination skin. As you have to deal with two nightmares i.e. oiliness and dryness. Typically combination skin has a mix of oily areas where you will see a lot of shine, grease and clogged pores whereas dry patches on cheeks, jaws and hairline. So here you need to find a middle ground which is neither too harsh on oily skin nor on dry skin. Thats where cream cleansers come to your rescue as they are mild and gentle on your skin. They hydrate and calm dry areas of your skin and also remove dirt and impurities from pores controlling excess oil production. Make sure you stay away from ingredients like Salicylic acid, retinol, benzoyl peroxide as they are good for acne prone skin but these are not for everyone as they can irritate the sensitive skin and make it dry and rough.
